Drishyam 3: I totally did not see this coming.

Two men face off indoors; stern man in white says, I hope everything is clear now, sir.

I did not see the first and second Drishyam in in Malyalam I only saw the Hindi Remakes, one look at the Malyalam Version And I am already sure that that was the wrong decision.

Now I may be somewhat of a Language Purist as in I totally believe that stories need to be seen in their original languages with subtitles in case you don't know the Language well enough, but I assure you, this is more than that.

One of the things that really surprised me about this movie is that unlike the usual thing one would expect from a Drishyam Movie if you have only see Tabu's awesome performance and not Asha Sharath's awesome performance, it is the father of the would have been rapist who is the main villain this time.

Now, given that the Remake artists in Bollywood decided to overdramatize everything and in the process blow all nuance out of the window like it was Angie Herself calling it off the shore...

Dark underwater scene with a snarling creature rising from the water; subtitle reads [Angie growling].

...I do not believe there is any conceivable way that the Hindi Version is going to pull this off.

I mean they cast Jaikant Shikre as the opposing Lawyer, Nuance is not in their blood

Two stern men in dark suits before bookshelves, one in profile and one leaning forward; poster text: Ajay & Prakash 2026 DRISHYAM 3

Ah yes make all the Singham jokes now.

But apart from all that, we actually see in the trailer that Tabu is active and handling the Case.

Serious woman and man sit in a warmly lit library; Sony Music logo appears at top left.

Now that... is a problem because as far as I can see Prakash Raj's character is entirely new to this version and on top of that, the equivalent in the Malyalam version is completely catatonic unable to process her loss.

Which is why the Husband is the villain.

Basically, he is doing this for her, now from what little I have seen in the Malyalam version there was always a bit of a villainous undertone to his character even though most of the major story beats were pretty much the same.

This is completely absent in the Hindi version.

Rajat Kapoor's version of the character is entirely the well meaning husband who would very well let all of this go if it were entirely in his hands.

Yeah he is not going on his Villain arc.

and let me be clear it is not what he says, but the way he says it.

Now look at these two scenes for example.

Split screen: two serious men stand in dim construction sites, one in a tan shirt amid green netting, one in blue by bamboo poles.

Both Depict George Kutty/Vijay Salgaokar coming out of the pre floored New police station right after he buried the body there.

They are both pretty similar except Ajay Devgn has a severe lack of sweat Glands, it is little things like these you know.

little details that they either glossed over or deliberately removed, micro expressions, red eyes, things like that.

the Hindi version is too cut and dry its all too clean, to put it in an analogy Malyalam version is the real New York and the Bollywood version is Monica's apartment from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Smiling woman gives thumbs up in front of a Friends cast collage holding hands on a studio set.

If you don't get what that means check the rent in New York.

Now that we have dodged that minefield in Sunny Praji Style

Silhouetted adult carrying a child across a sandy beach at sunset, with a hazy sky and distant shoreline.

Let's actually get to why I believe, even before seeing the Hindi version, that while the previous two movies were close in quality this time the Malyalam version will be a overall far superior product.

For one, this isn't called the conclusion, in fact there is sequel bait at the end.

Now I know how we all feel about that shit, in fact when I heard Drishyam 2 I went into a towering rage filled with loads of talking to my friends about how much I hate the leaning towards sequels in modern cinema and watching Captain America the winter soldier.

Jokes aside I truly did not believe Drishyam ever needed a sequel but the way they did it was so good that I was won over.

The only reason I even sat in that theatre was because I wanted to write about it and then I didn't do it.

Regardless, while on the general taking everything to a sequel is definitely a problem with modern cinema, it is not a problem with this cinema, and now that they have potentially skipped the Husband's Villain arc, straight to the conclusion there will be a good chance that things are rushed and that they will potentially try to keep this cut and dry and not nuanced.

Now we know why that is a bad thing on the surface but let me get to why I really think that.

Stern bearded man in a plaid shirt faces a woman outside a building; subtitle reads I fear what I'm capable of.

George Kutty had one goal to make sure his daughter never went to Jail.

And this time things were quite well set up.

It was a Trap.

Remember her epilepsy from the last movie?

Well in this case they tried to play the long game by making sure she doesn't get married to absolutely anyone but this plant who they paid off to make it look like she assaulted and killed her husband on the first day of their marriage due to something called Sexual Aversion which may cause her to be violent towards someone who approaches her with the intention of sexual activity.

This false diagnosis was set up by Sahadevan and Geetha's Husband by blackmailing her therapist.

You know there is a uncomfortable connotation here about women victims of attempted or successful sexual assault being rejected for having "issues" I mean yes that is kind of the entire plot of these three movies but this time, shit got way too real.

And the institution of arranged marriages fails again.

Split screen: frightened couple in a dim room with subtitle This is a trap, and a red alien in a white spaceship.

And so what is a Man supposed to do but hit his own daughter to make sure that the real villains get caught... wait what?

You see until now, George has been counting on the police underestimating him but this time, shit was personal, and they weren't sloppy so in the absence of evidence, he had to create some. this man is not a hero, he is a criminal working for justice when the system fails him and his family.

If this doesn't convince you then look at this scene where he straight up pulls a knife on Sahadevan and threatens to kill him.

Blurry dark indoor scene of a man lunging with a knife while another person grabs him, tense and violent.

He is exactly the kind of man he needs to be to defeat these bastards, I mean Granted Sahadevan probably deserved it as will his counterpart Gaitonde if this scene ever makes it to Drishyam the Conclusion.

But he is not a Hero.

He hit his own daughter, yes to save her, but thats the thing, the villains won.

They got him to fall.

And they are not done, they want the daughter now.

One Woman suffering from a post traumatic illness trying her best to get another woman suffering from post traumatic illness locked up for going through what every woman has gone through at some point.

Woman on a couch in a dim living room says I want her!, looking tense and determined.

Cause by her own son no less!

And then Men in both their lives make criminals of themselves trying to get their will carried out...

This is layered nuanced writing that takes time to unravel and as such demands to be spread over multiple movies.

But unfortunately not only will the Bollywood version try to conclude everything here and miss a lot of the Nuance in the story, they will also skip a very real depiction of Trauma and a very layered critique of the system of arranged marriages or I may be wrong, the fuck do I know?

This movie was all about the things George over looked, like the guard he manipulated to get the skeletons exchanged, that aspect may still play into the story, I guess we will have to see when I see the movie in... less that 20 minutes....

I am never getting to that theatre in time am I ?
