Lee Cronin's the Mummy, Actually good or Budget Exorcist?(Spoilers!!!!)

Maud with bloody fake teeth and Katie in the Sarcophagus.

Now... I will just straight up say it, This is not what you would expect when you hear the title: The Mummy, generally speaking, whenever you hear that, you expect an unnecessarily high amount of Tomb raiding, a random curse that makes the corpse come back to life or something, and then depending on the type of movie, either run from it scared or do a backflip snap the bad guy's neck and save the day!

Yes that is a Ryan George reference, and I love you for getting that.

What we do not expect is for a random Demon to just posses a little girl and then horrify a family for two hours straight.

That is the exorcist.

I mean what happened to you guys after the Mummy Returns man? How the fuck do you keep fucking up this premise so bad?

Brandon Fraiser Holding a Cat to scare the Mummy in the 1999 movie.
Not a single cat comes up to scare the little girl 0/10!!!

Now I don't want to give everyone the wrong Idea, The Mummy 2026 is not a bad movie, not by any stretch of the imagination, it just... gets a little generic at times, with the whole stupid decisions, the Kid being kidnapped by stranger danger incarnate, and then the Family being saved by ritualistic Chanting, except this time it is not a priest but actually the Scarlet Scarab.

Um yeah, no, I am doing that thing where there is an actor in the movie who played a character from another thing I watched and I am just pretending that everywhere this actor appears its just that very same Character.

And this time it isn't even that out of context, because Layla El-Faouly for one shares a name with Layla Khalil, but on the other Hand, she becomes the Avatar of Tawaret whose job it is to guide people through the Afterlife and then as the Scarlet Scarab, chants alongside Mark Spector as Moon Knight to lock Ahmitt away in an Ushabti forever, and not a Rock like usual, a man.

The Villain of the story i.e. Arthur Harrow.

Scarlet Scarab and Moon Knight make Harrow into an Ushabti for Ahmitt.

So now would you like to guess what she does in the movie?

This movie follows a single family i.e. the Cannon Family as their eldest Child Katie is kidnapped one day while they are in Cairo Egypt, Eight years go by with no results and the kid who Larissa was pregnant with at the time has now grown up to her school going age,

Eight years back when Katie was first lost, the parents met an officer wanting to be promoted to missing persons in Cairo and her superior thought that the Father had killed the daughter and was trying to hide it.

Eight years go by and that superiors opinions are in the grave with him and May Calamaw.... I mean Layla El-Fau.... The Scarlet Sc.... ah yes Zaki has taken his place and she promises to investigate who did this.

Strange because the Daughter has now been found locked in a Coffin which was being carried in a helicopter that crashed and the occupants died in the most Gruesome Final destination way possible.

But the daughter isn't fine, and the Parents want justice, so game bloody on.

Katie the scary version.

Now the whole section of the movie where the haunted girl is brought into the house is pretty much what you would expect, with enough disgusting shit to fuel your nightmares in the upcoming 69 rebirths that you will go through for some reason.

But the thing that frustrates me is the online discourse surrounding this movie, and I almost fell for it myself, everyone seems to be clowning on the decision made by Larissa(The Mom) at a point in the story when The girl goes into the walls and starts eating critters.

Essentially Charlie(The Dad) suggests that they find a place other than the home for little old Katie, and the mother is just like NO! I WILL TAKE CARE OF HER.

And... people are frustrated by that because they think it's idiot plot.

In literary criticism, an idiot plot is a fictional storyline which is "kept in motion solely by virtue of the fact that everybody involved is an idiot"

And I don't know if people watching this movie have never seen a woman with her child, or what but.... Are you fucking serious?

The Doctors at Cairo essentially told them that she was mummified and being transported in a fucking coffin for who knows how long, and at the same time coffins are a good way to human Traffic in Egypt, so who knows what else has happened to her, and again for Eight fucking years.

The Doctors also said that the comfort of home will help her come out of it, of course a mother wants her child to stick around.

Katie wakes up in the Sarcophagus.

And secondly, once the Demon is freed a little, post a nail cutting session that peeled off a section of her skin and hence broke the protection spell binding the Demon.

The Demon starts possessing the other kids and the Grandma is killed by the Demon after which Coyotes eat her to death.

And they hold a Funeral...

At the Funeral, the smallest kid Maud rips out all her teeth, Foreshadowed by an earlier scene where her last milk tooth was coming loose, and then takes the Grandma's artificial Dentures and puts them in her mouth after spraying blood all over the food and Katie jumps from the room above onto the corpse and bites it.

Now Immediately the Family starts packing while Charlie watches over Katie.

It is at this point that the Detective Zaki gets to them with what she has learnt and people criticize that why are they still in the same house and I am like... hello? They are leaving!!!

And speaking specifically about foreshadowing, there is a lot of that here, through detective work, specifically when the peeled off skin gives the father a lead to what has actually happened to Katie, this and him getting the name Layla from Katie trying to communicate through the possession using Morse code that Katie and Charlie discussed at the beginning of the movie.

Katie mutilating her wound with a Steel rod.

It is only through Layla and the enchanted bindings off of Katie's ripped off skin that they are able to learn that the Demon Nasmaranian is Mummified in her body.

It is an obvious allegory for grief, in its parasitic and spreading nature and how it destroys Families.

But all things considered at the end this is obviously Budget Exorcist, and Evil Dead rise, especially when Katie asked her brother to come help her undress...

(*Shivers*)

And then there is also the criticism of the Demon just randomly spouting school yard non sense, which is Tiring, but at the same time, Is that not what a Demon would do? Like to mock people and society?

Anyways Charlie becomes a willing Ushabti of the Demon.

Maud suddenly magically regrows all her teeth and Katie regrows all her skin....

And then they go to the original Kidnapper who is actually not dead even though she was shot by Zaki and Bleeding out, and then they transfer the Demon into her...

Which is an ending me and a lot of other people actually liked, so thanks movie.

Oh and Zaki has a scorpion tossed down her throat that also punctures it and because only she cared to learn the transfer words... she has to shove a finger into the hole to chant...

I just wanted to mention that for some reason.

Enjoy this still of black shit coming out of the daughter and entering the fathers mouth, with the words Trailer HD written on it....

And yes, that is a real sentence I just said.

The Demon Transfers from Katie to Charlie.
