Snow White as a movie has not had a great track record when it comes to.... Well anything...
Whether it be the initial fact of Snow White not being remotely white, I mean the legend is literally about a woman born from a drop of blood on Snow and hence being "white" as Snow...
Or the fact that Peter Dinklage put shade on the film regarding its depiction of "Dwarves" and the related Stereotypes, of course this movie's "Dwarves" are supernatural creatures more than anything else, but they exist and they are in the movie.
I guess the reason this controversy popped up was because of the fact that they modernized the rest of the story to make it's depiction of Women better, and not have them be, Damsels in distress or evil nail biting psychopaths.
Basically if you look at it a little too hard the original Snow white suffers from a serious case of the Madonna Whore Complex.
Snow white is the pure white as Snow innocent little girl who is just looking for her man so she can marry and become a queen, and the Evil queen is well... the outspoken woman...
Not very flattering.
And the final kiss saving Snow White from certain death is also strange as well... the prince is a Stranger to Snow White, who sees her corpse and just decides to kiss it, modern audiences very astutely point out that well at best this is sexual assault at worst necrophilia, or is it the other way around?
They did the same thing with Maleficent modernizing the story of Sleeping beauty.
Because remember kids, the only True love's kiss, is girl to girl.

Hey I get to make that joke, I am queer, and also, Honest Trailers did it first...
But while Maleficent was greatly enjoyed by Audiences, it had two advantages that this version of Snow White didn't
Number one: the live action Remake hate hadn't quite begun yet.
Number two: While the movie acknowledged the problems with a woman being saved by the "love" of a Stranger she never met before and it broke the Tradition of Love simply meaning Romantic Love, What it didn't do was call the fans of the original Dickheads.
That is something the Snow White movie also did not do, but the lead actress did go on a charade about how "evidently" the original movie is stuck in the 1930s.
And also they called the movie Weird and did a lot of other things.
At this point might as well call the people enjoying this movie Dickheads.
Yeah the movie had issues, thanks. So did a lot of other things, Maleficent succeeded because it came across as a Reimagining and not "fixing" the original, yes it did promise to show a different angle, but that simply came across as telling an untold Story, it felt Earnest.
This one, well it did not, but there also a two point five reason.
Back then hating on people of color and women simply because the are "DEI" and "Woke" wasn't as big as it is now, it was in its... growing pains era let's say.

Today this hate train is full steam ahead, and it is under the guise of "saving" the "real" art, when in reality art has always broken boundaries and hence been political by side effect, and as well Art embraces Variation, it thrives in it, diversity of any kind is the most artistic thing ever, and so are reimaginings.
Cruella was a reimagining, it was amazing, no cap(Okay GenZ haters you can cry in the side), and it was a reimagining, the fact that this version of Snow White changes up the story or what the name "Snow White" means is not inherently a bad thing, at the same time, being chastised for something you liked as a kid and it being called "weird" is bound to make you a little mad.
Problem is there a giant ass river in between those two.
Look does Rachel Zegler deserve the hate? Who knows, for all I see she simply got carried away, and I mean actors are NARCISTIC??? *LE GASP!!! Anyways the movie should be judged on it's own merits, so what are they?
Let's get to i.... Actually, did you know the original Sleeping beauty was about twenty times more darker than the movie, in the book the sleeping beauty got Se*ually Assa*lted by the prince and had kids that were Delivered and the one of them sucked at her fingers removing the splinter/needle and so she woke up...
Goddamn if it was that easy why didn't you pull out the needle yourself?
Did it have to be a baby? Did it have to be sucking? Who knows??

Well it's actually because the king abandoned the kingdom as a Tomb of the princess.
See a sleeping woman and go and do the thing to her consent be damned, a Brother's Grimm tale everyone...
Speaking of the Brother's Grimm, little Red Riding hood, ate her grandmother, mistaking teeth for rice and blood for wine, the wolf was meant to represent the average depraved customer who would use the services of a Sex Worker, gaining pleasure from feeding Red Riding Hood the remains of her grandmother....
Yes in some interpretations the name "Red" "Riding" Hood meant something quite else...
Are the Brothers Grimm okay? I mean surely not cause they are dead, but really, who hurt them?
And then we have Snow White, The evil queen tried to kill snow white three times, once by tying a tight corset around her disguised as an old Lady, second with a poisoned comb and third with a poisoned apple, that actually worked.
Surprisingly when giving the apple, the evil step mother was disguised as a Farmer's wife and not an old woman, which actually makes more sense as a Farmer's wife is more likely to have an Apple, and as well by this point snow white probably will not trust old women.
And as if that isn't enough, Snow White was seven....
She died....
The Dwarves are sad and unable to Bury her so they preserve her in a Glass coffin...
The prince sees this seven year old girl and is infatuated and convinces the dwarves to just let him take her, she falls over and the bit of the poisoned apple lodged in her throat comes off and she is Alive again.
The prince proposes and she says yes...
Now I don't know what the prince was going to do with the body, being that it is the brothers Grimm, I know we are all thinking it...

And as if that is not enough, the fairy god mother... wait what? No No the Evil Step mother, Okay wait that is Cinderella, but I guess it applies here as well, anyways the evil queen, decided to attend the Wedding and she was forced to wear hot iron slippers and dance till she died...
BROTHERS GRIMM EVERYONE!!!!
Man I guess the 1937 movie was tame.
But all of this to say, a common thread in a lot of Brother's Grimm "Fairy tales" is strong outspoken independent women being shown as evil and vein and self obsessed all the while the meek submissive beautiful daughter is the real virtuous woman, always as young as possible, and she gets saved by a beautiful prince.
Look at Cinderella, Sleeping beauty, Snow White, The little Mermaid... I mean did anyone ever wonder why becoming a real woman took away her voice??
Point is, the source material is problematic, okay...
What does the movie do with it?
Well firstly it doesn't justify the name Snow White, which is okay, whatever...
But as the story goes by, the fact that this version of Snow White kind of starts to grow on you cannot be ignored, I mean it did for me.
She is portrayed as someone who wants to follow in the footsteps of her parents who were kind and gentle rulers, under whom the kingdom thrived.
The main thing with this version of Snow White is that she is a people person, she helps people, she goes out of her way to do it, and it... strangely works....?

You believe why the Dwarves would be so sad at her being gone, like you felt it in the previous one as well, but there it was more like, oh we lost our new innocent friend.
Here, she actually contributes to the lives of the Dwarves, they are drawn towards her and she inspires them to be better, especially Dopey, the one who couldn't speak.
In this version, he actually can speak, he is just too afraid to.
Because of Snow White's unyielding will to help others and her inherent goodness, you believe the Huntsman's Sudden heel turn, in this version he didn't grow a conscience, he was simply overwhelmed by her kindness and couldn't bring himself to do it.
So he lets her go...
Her power to draw people around her and Rally them is so strong that it even works on Animals apparently.
Also here in this version the man she falls for is a no good thief who steals in her father's name, because he remembered life under the King, and he uses that to Rally his team.
Snow White is able to turn this thief over to the good side and make him believe that things can be good again...
And finally the apple scene remains, but the ending, the ending is Snow White Dressed as Red Riding hood walking into the kingdom as a distraction while the Dwarves and the thieves take the castle from within....
And then the evil mother dies because she broke the mirror... because the Mirror told her that while the evil queen is beautiful it is only skin deep, snow white is truly beautiful, from within....

No Now you see, in this version "Fairness" is another word for Attractiveness, the Queen is Fair, because she is beautiful and extremely manipulative, Snow White on the other hand, is true to herself, she is so kind that she actively attracts people, people want to work for her...
So she is the fairest of them all, she wasn't before, because she didn't step up, but once she did, things Changed....
The ending though... as seen above, only sees the queen turn to stone and die... I was expecting a huge battle the way the things were going, but maybe that's just the marvel nerd in me speaking...
Regardless this is worse than Breaking Dawn Part 2, at least there we got the fight even if in a dream....
So overall I will definitely say, poor marketing, great idea, horrible execution, and horrible executions if you consider the off screen deaths that surely happened, but I can't find it in me to completely hate this movie, they tried something new, it wasn't the best, and that's okay, who wants the same thing over and over anyways???
The one thing I will say though, this movie definitely did make me feel true nostalgia for the fairy tales of old, there were moments in this when It actually invoked the same feeling, the castle especially, bring me a more evil queen castle, I'll wait...
It is one of those movies that you will fairly enjoy over the watch find it to be a fairly pleasant experience, then the ending will ruin it for you and then you return and actually think about it...

Over all not that bad, definitely would recommend if you aren't in too bad a mood...
