The Karate Kid Legends, joining together two branches of a tree.

Movie poster

Now how much content can you actually make out of the simple premise of a kid learning Karate from a master and then possibly maybe almost certainly end up fighting in a grand tournament against a dickhead from a rival Dojo which is almost always certainly Cobra Kai or Cobra Kai inspired and everyone including the lead teacher in the Dojo has a huge boner for being completely anti mercy.

Well six season of Cobra Kai three Karate Kid movies, a soft reboot and an actual reboot which is now actually canon to the previous timeline actually, because Legends exists now, says that quite a lot actually.

But in an era of constantly bringing back old dead franchises for no other reason than to make a quick buck, are any of these worth it?

Yes, yes they are, cause you will be surprised how entertaining this simple premise can be, and also La Russo is coming back in this one, they going back to the roots, if nothing else, Nostalgia certainly works.

I mean I just saw two of the Karate Kid movies before going to the theatre and even I had a LOOK ITS THE THING moment when I saw Daniel's yellow Car alongside the other cars that Miyagi had him clean in the iconic wax on, wax off moment.

Mr. Han goes to visit Daniel La Russo

Now obviously I would have loved to meet Mr. Miyagi again but unfortunately reality got in the way and Pat Morita is dead, I mean he lived a long and hopefully happy life, may he rest in peace, and in the canon of the movie, even Mr. Miyagi is dead.

However in an act of similar anti aging as Tom Cruise, we have Daniel La Russo who actually looks 40 but is 63 which is less than Ten years away from Jackie Chan who is 71 in real life, and yet somehow a contemporary of Mr. Miyagi.

And also their families have been tied together for centuries as a sound alike for Pat Morita expands on a scene from Karate Kid 2 where he speaks about an ancestor called Shimpo Miyagi who got drunk on his boat and washed up on the shores of China from whence he brought a Chinese wife and Karate with him.

Here it is explained that the people who helped him were from the Han Family, two branches of the same tree they call it.

Now this movie takes place a mere two months after the conclusion of the Six seasons of Cobra Kai, but it seems most of the connections are to the Karate Kid part 2, which is by far the best in the original Trilogy(at least in my opinion.)

The Part three and Cobra Kai don't really seem to be important in this one as again, I saw only the first two movies and I was never once confused, it is still to be seen whether seeing the third film and the show enhances the movie in anyways, even though Daniel comes into the picture quite late.

This movie begins with the new Karate Kid, Li Fong being trained by Jackie Chan's Jacket on Jacket off, Mr. Han, although surprisingly we see no Dre Parker or Meiying, I guess those two just didn't exist or something, but then again why would Mr. Han randomly bring up someone he trained years ago when by now he clearly has way too many students to count.

Regardless the new kid comes with a lot of changes, for one, he is already a badass, which would make one wonder what is the majority of the movie going to be if there is no need for training, well its not like there is no need, one can never stop learning, as it is shown very clearly in the beginning when Li tries his brother's Dragon kick on this movie's main antagonist Connor Day, who easily counters it.

Connor Counters Li's Dragon Kick

But regardless he is somewhat of a master himself, and this time, they throw a wrench in the works as Li's mom doesn't want him to fight after having lost her elder son to a sore looser and a bunch of hooligans who jumped him after he won a tournament.

So in the moments before the interval, Li cannot fight, okay, but he can train!!! Yes, in this movie the Kid becomes the trainer, at least in the beginning.

Which is an interesting concept, certainly...

And this also gives us an absolute treat in giving us two final battles, one pre interval and one just as the movie ends.

In this movie Li asks for a stuffed crust in the first pizza place he goes to and get's the nickname Stuffed Crust from Mia Lipani who is running the shop alongside her father Victor Lipani, in this movie Mia is also the girl who Li eventually falls for and starts a relationship with, and her father somehow owes money to the same people who are training Mia's ex boyfriend who is also this film's main antagonist.

Holy Coincidence much?

But regardless Victor decides to fight for money and Li trains him, which then unfortunately leads to Victor being paralyzed by illegal elbow hits to the head and being sent to the hospital upon the request of O'Shea, who owns Demolition Dojo, the very same Dojo that Conor trains at.

This obviously causes Li to have flashbacks to his own Brother's death, and almost giving up on his fighting, until of course His uncle Mr.Han comes in to support him once again.

Mr.Han and Li talk about Li's future.

This causes him to finally enter into a tournament known as the Five Boroughs to face Connor. And in order to face this they need to bring in Daniel La Russo, the original Karate Kid.

And so begins another training montage of Li this time fighting in the five boroughs in order to save Victor's Pizza shop.

And its a lot of Jacket on Jacket off until they all come up with a way to use the Dragon Kick as a trap to trick Connor and call it the tiger trap, and then its the day of the tournament.

Obviously we all know what happens, Li wins after almost loosing and using the tiger trap to trick Connor.

But all in all its quite an entertaining watch I would say, all things considered.
